Alright, so we have some updates on the Thursday night Mustache glass event with Austin Beerworks at Billy’s on Burnet. 

Update 1: The Austin Beerworks firkin, named “Mr. Falcon”, will be a blend of Fire Eagle and Black Thunder dosed with Amarillo and Centinnial hops.

Update 2: We partnered wt the folks at Brewski.me to create an award for anyone who Drinks the Mr. Falcon on Thursday night.

Yeah, great stuff.

So come out Thursday to Billy’s at 7pm for some Mr. Falcon in Mustache glasses.

As you may or may not know, the LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon is this weekend, and I’m happy to say my wife and I will be two of the 12,000 half marathoners (plus 6,000 marathoners) running the streets of Austin Sunday.

I have a feeling a lot of those runners love their beer. And despite what the TV may have told you, plenty of them are reaching for a craft brew. Craft beer and running, along with an abundance of outdoor activities, seem to go hand in hand.

Just ask the Beer Runner, who is more than a third of the way through his quest to run and drink a beer for 365 consecutive days, those runners who have waited in line to get a beer from Hops & Grains following the Rogue Raffler events, or the various clubs that put on pub runs.

A great beer can taste even better after a long run. It also makes an easy reward. I know there are plenty of days where the thought of pint at Billy’s on Burnet or home brew from the fridge is the only thing that keeps me pushing through a sluggish run. On the flipside, running can give great balance to those crazy weeks where you find yourself hopping from one special beer event to the next.

So cheers to all you beer runners, and good luck if you’re running this weekend. I know I’m already contemplating my post run drinking. Cheap Texas pints at Draught House? House beers from Black Star? Something I’ve been holding on to at home? Whatever it is, I know it will be extra tasty after those 13.1 miles.

As if we weren’t already excited enough about our (512) Brewing cask/keep the glass night at Billy’s on Burnet, we woke up this morning to see the boys have added two new fermenting tanks. A few (512) brewers will be on hand tonight when the cask is tapped so come by and congratulate them on the continued success. Who knows, maybe they’ll even tell you more on how they got all that in there.

See you at Billy’s on Burnet tonight (Oct. 28)  for Austin Beer Week as we enjoy a cask of Bruin dry hopped with Simcoe (we heard this is the first public (512) firkin!)

The short:

• 2 new 60 barrel fermentation tanks
• 40% increase in production capacity
• Annual production now over 4,000 barrels
• Room for tanks made by moving the chiller outside
• Allows for some new creations!

The long (from (512) Brewing Facebook page):
We’re the proud new owners of yet two more 60BBL fermentation tanks at (512) Brewing! More beer to come!! This expansion represents a 40% increase in production capacity and brings are total annual production volume to well over 4000BBL per year! In addition to allowing us the ability to keep up with continued demand for (512) beers, these tanks will likely enable Nate to brew some of the many new creations we have in the works.

Where could these tanks fit in our current space, you may be asking? Well, we took this opportunity to relocate the chiller to outside, which was very similar to a heart transplant for the brewery. The chiller supplies cold antifreeze solution (glycol/water) to the fermentation tanks and cold water tank on demand and in order to not interrupt a very tight production schedule, taking the chiller off line for as short a time as possible was crucial. Nate’s skills working under fire constantly made it a pretty painless transition, but this is it, as far as new tanks, for this space. New tanks, scheduled for sometime in the 1st quarter of 2011, will accompany a new chiller and hopefully the adjoining rest of the building.

Thanks for creating a need for us to grow as rapidly as we have!

Possibly the only thing better than a megalomaniac rapper claiming to replace a chunk of his teeth with diamonds is Austin Beer Week.

Or maybe just imaging this guy chewing his food with the same items most of us chumps use to vow our lives to our loved ones with is just a little bit better.

Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Austin Beer Week. It’s a week long celebration of beer in Austin. Lots of lots of local events. Enough stuff to last us a couple months during regular season. Shit, half a year. Putting this fanboy into over time.

We’re doing a bike pub crawl wt this jerk, and then we have a special (512) cask tapping event at Billy’s on Burnet on Thursday. I heard it could be a dry hopped cask of the Bruin or possibly the TWO. Who knows. We’ll post more as we find out.

So those are the BEST events of the whole week.

In addition to our fantastic events there is a whole lot going on. All the area brewpubs will be serving a similarly brewed IPA with different varieties of hops per brew pub. It’s called the Hop School IPA and there is a contest going to name the different hop styles used in each one.

Horse’s mouth:

HOP SCHOOL IPA
Total IBUs 60 = measure of bitterness in relation to International Bittering Units scale
O.G. 16 P (1.064) = original gravity
F.G. 3 P (1.012) = final gravity; will vary by brewery
Ave. ABV 6.9% = alcohol by volume
Yeast: Standard Clean American
Base malt 94%
Crystal 20 L malt 6% = a touch of color and sweetness. (think Stone Ruination)
Bittering Hop: Apollo
Boil Time: 60 min. for about 50 IBUs
**FLAVOR HOP: CAN YOU ID THIS HOP VARIETY?
Boil Time: 10 min. for 10 IBUs
** – Used through to the end to ensure the majority of the hop character of the beer is from the house hop. Aroma hop (no boil time) may have been the same ‘house’ hop or not, and some brewpubs may have dry hopped in fermentor.

There will be a bus touring the brewpubs to taste different varieties of this beer. Sounds fun.
