(512) Brewing Co. Bruin Double Brown Tasting, Plus… Love in Barrels

Bruin_PourLast Saturday, Halloween, the nice fellas at (512) Brewing Co opened their doors and hosted a tasting/debut of their new seasonal the Double Brown Bruin Ale!

At ~7.7% ABV, it’s a big brown bear beer muscled up with a “pretty high proportion” of organic Munich malt in addition to (512)’s standard organic two row malt, plus chocolate and crystal malt with a kiss of molasses. It was bittered with Fuggle hops AND dry hopped with Fuggle as well.

This seasonal came from one of Nate’s old homebrewing experiments. He said from a miscalculation. I wish my homebrewing miscalculations would come out this well.

In my opinion, it was not what I expected, but not in a bad way. As Nate explains in the video, the brown is not a common/popular style to go extreme on, and I was expecting something very warm on alcohol with malt so thick you could lick it off the sides of the glass.

It’s got the malt, but those Fuggle hops got teeth. Like a bear. It seems all warm and snuggly, but get close enough, and the Bruin will bite, and rip your face off. Clean off.

Half way through my first one, as it warmed up, I really enjoyed it. And I was Grizzly Man-ing it by the end of the second.

Shawn said it smelt like “homebrewing”, and I agree, due to the huge amount of malt plus the dry hopping.

The name: Bruin = bear and/or brown depending on how far back linguistically you go. Also, Nate’s parents were on a softball team by the same name. Who knew?

According to Kevin, the Bruin should have hit the taps on Monday.

Nate also spilt the beans on the nice stack of Jack Daniel’s barrels resting beside the new fermentor.

THEY ARE FULL OF DOUBLE PECAN PORTER!!@#$PecanPorter_Barrels

Clocking in close to 10% ABV, (512)’s sleeper hit Pecan Porter has been doubled, AND it’s aging in Jack Daniel’s barrels.

We already like this beer, mathematically, this should mean we should like it twice as much.

Sounds like BTA has a science project on our hands.

Kevin/Nate said this should be out in the Winter Solstice/Holiday season. Something to look forward to.

Thanks to Kevin and Nate for opening their doors and sharing their great beers.

Cheers, guys!
