(512) Whiskey Barrel Aged 2X Pecan Porter

2xpp Oh happy day!

I got back in town just last night and was pleased as punch that there was some of this left. I heard it has run out at Ginger Man (unconfirmed) but as of 12-27-09 it was on at Draught House.

So good. It’s like all the things about the OG Pecan Porter I love, but doubled, and wearing a warm whiskey coat.

If you haven’t tried this yet, go out and get some before it disappears. Via the BeerAdvocate SW forum Nate said,

“…we did seven 53-gal barrels, which came to a bit over 25 kegs when all was said and done.”

Also via the forum (you know, you could just get on BA and bypass the middle-man-ness BTA has become…) Sam at Flying Saucer said,

“…At the Saucer we have a handful of kegs of this wonderful elixer that we will be tapping for events of the next year, some of which won’t even be getting tapped till next beer fest (october 2010).”

Awesome. It’s a great beer as is, but I’d love to try it again as it ages. Look at the guys at the Saucer being all planny and stuff.

Here’s how I described it last night during my second half pint:

“2XPecanPorter is very nice. Creamy, smooth, rich with a fire whiskey after taste. I likes.”

In retrospect, it is a great variation on a great beer. The beefed up malt presence moved the chocolate notes more to the forefront with a nice creamy vanilla from the oak finished with a fire-y whiskey mouth at the end. I only had two, and woke up feeling like I’d had a few whiskey shots… in a good way. 2xpp

BTA is not in the practice of reporting rumors, but just between you and me I heard they plan on putting some more porter in the whiskey barrels soon… which I guess is something you could have easily assumed.

With this fine fine Winter seasonal, Kevin and Nate of (512) are further proving that they plan on being an innovative brewery pushing the envelope of the local palate. I look forward to the Spring seasonal.
